  4. The  catalogs  contained in the Locale directory are for use primarily with
  5. Workbench  2.1  and 3.0.  They are automatically copied to your system disk
  6. by the installation scripts.

  9. How to localize PowerData
  10. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  11. I  have also included the source code required to localize PowerData to any
  12. language (standard CatComp catalog translation files).  If PowerData is not
  13. yet localized in your particular language, I would be most grateful for any
  14. translation  you can provide me with.  However, you should probably contact
  15. me first, so I can coordinate who's doing what.

  17. The .ct format may not be particulary intelligible to you, if you are not a
  18. programmer.   However,  all  existing .ct translation files are included so
  19. that you can see how it's done.
  20.  
  21. There are a few important points that you must observe when translating:
  22.  
  23. · Make clear, understandable translations. Your target is a user who
  24.   has no understanding whatsoever of programming lingo.
  25.  
  26. · Try translating EVERY english word.  Use synonyms for the hard ones.  For
  27.   example, use "reserve" or "get" in stead of "allocate".  I'll allow some
  28.   rephrasing in the translation of the longest strings, but not too much.
  29.  
  30. · Leave words you have NO translation for, in english.  For example, if you
  31.   have no translation for "hotkey", don't try translating "hot" and "key"
  32.   seperately, in desperation.  Such attempts usually give meaningless
  33.   results (funny, but meaningless).

  35. · Cross-check with other .ct files if you have any doubts about what to
  36.   translate, and what to leave in english.
  37.  
  38. · Make sure gadget and other GUI related strings still fit when translated.
  39.   The strings with the following identifications MUST NOT be longer than
  40.   these specifications, or the GUI will turn out looking very strange:

  42.     MSG_EFF_<anything>    up to 10 characters
  43.     MSG_BUF_<anything>    -  -  10 -
  44.     MSG_EFFECT_<anything>    -  -  10 -
  45.  
  46.     MSG_GAD_TEMPPATH    up to 14 characters
  47.     MSG_GAD_INCLUDE        -  -  14 -
  48.     MSG_GAD_EXCLUDE        -  -  14 -
  49.     MSG_GAD_SHOWWIN        -  -  14 -
  50.     MSG_GAD_ENABLE        -  -  14 -
  51.     MSG_GAD_DISABLE        -  -  14 -

  61.    You must not make translations that exceed these specifications.
  62.    Abbreviate, if you have to.
  63.  
  64. · Some strings contain control information such as "%s" or "%ld". This
  65.   indicates that a string or number is to eventually appear at that
  66.   position, so you'll have to include this information in your translation
  67.   as well.

  69. · A \n means "new line". Include this information in translated strings,
  70.   too. Keep lines approximately as long as they were originally.

  73. Lastly, let me remind you that a complete translation requires not only the
  74. program  strings,  but also the install script to be localized.  Since this
  75. requires  some  basic information on how The Installer works, I'd prefer if
  76. you just translated all the english strings you can find in the script, and
  77. put  this translation into a seperate file.  I will then insert the strings
  78. at the correct positions.

  80. As  previously  mentioned,  translations  are  most welcome.  I aim to have
  81. PowerData 100% localized in all the standard languages -- and a few others,
  82. if  possible.   I'm  afraid  I can't pay anyone for their trouble, but I do
  83. offer  a  life  time  free  upgrade  service  of  PowerData  to  anyone who
  84. contributes a translation.  Good enough?

  86. One  important  note:   Do  NOT  release .catalog or .ct files on your own.
  87. Mail  translations to me.  I will then incorporate it into the distribution
  88. and  give  you  proper  credit  in  PowerData's  manual.   Further, I can't
  89. coordinate  anything  if  catalog  files  of  all  kinds of languages start
  90. floating around.
